The McLaren P1 ended production in 2015 after 375 cars. McLaren W1 Powertrain | 1,258 hp from V8 and Radial Flux Motor
The W1's drivetrain is a plug-in hybrid system McLaren calls the MHP-8, combining two distinct power sources working in parallel. The combustion component is a new 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft, capable of revving to 9,200 rpm and producing 916 hp on its own. McLaren describes the specific output as 230 hp per liter, the highest figure in any production McLaren.
The electric component is a radial flux motor and integrated Motor Control Unit, together designated the E-module. The technology is sourced from IndyCar racing and the complete E-module weighs just 44 pounds while spinning to 24,000 rpm, delivering 342 hp. A structural carbon-fiber battery enclosure housing approximately 1.4 kWh sits low in the chassis to optimize the center of gravity. McLaren rates the electric-only driving range at approximately two miles, with a charge time of 22 minutes to 80 percent. The battery also powers the car's fully electric reversing function, eliminating a conventional reverse gear from the V8 drivetrain. The W1's aerodynamic package draws directly from McLaren's Formula 1 program. The headline hardware is the Long Tail Rear Wing, which can extend rearward by up to 11.8 inches from its retracted position. At maximum deployment, the combined active aero system generates 2,205 lb of downforce. McLaren says the package is so effective that the W1 laps its Nardo reference circuit three full seconds faster than the track-focused Senna, which was previously the quickest production McLaren ever built. The carbon fiber monocoque chassis is structural throughout, including the front seats, which are integrated into the tub for rigidity rather than mounted conventionally. The pedals, steering wheel, and instrument binnacle adjust to fit the driver instead. Interior storage is intentionally minimal: a sliding cupholder, a small tray behind the armrest, and four cubic feet of space behind the seats accessed by folding the headrests.
